The author Ralph Connor is the pen name of Rev. Dr. Charles William Gordon (1860-1937) was a Canadian novelist and a church leader with the United churches and earlier a master at Upper Canada College. He published 43 titles. With a theological background, it is not unusual that the sub-themes of many of his books is religious and moral. So also with The Foreigner, the story is about a young Russian immigrant who came to Canada during the great immigration of Western Canada during the late 1800's. A large number of immigrants came from Eastern Europe, Poland and Ukraine where their condition was very bad. Canada was a land of opportunity and unknown freedom. Although they were resourceful and hardworking, their culture was alien from the dominant English. The story tells of the early discrimination that they endured, but eventually overcame due to their hard work, Christian outlook. The book by Canadian writer Pierre Burton 'The Promised Land' gives a very detailed account of the immigration to Western Canada during the late 1800's and early 1900's.
Used book with 100+ years old. Slight discoloration/fading and worn edges/corners as well as marks of water. The book looks good, readable; but at same time in a delicate condition due aging and use.
Dimensions: 7.75" x 5.25" x 1.5" inches / Weight: 485 grams
