An extraordinary and engaging 19th century artifact of Coco De Mer (sea coconut) kashkul, known as a “beggar’s bowl.” The coco de mer is the largest of its kind in the world and a rarity confined to the island of Seychelles in the Indian Ocean. This admirable piece of art history was used as part of Hindu Priest Accessories in the 1800s and survived in remarkable good condition. The Nut is intact without crack and have some dirtiness and marks. The metal hinge is withoxxide and have missing nails but works ok and can be replaced. The nut even if in pretty good condition will be happy having some professional attentions like cleaning and varnishing, doing so you will increase very much the value of the piece (but do it with a professional).
Lodoicea, commonly known as the sea coconut, coco de mer, or double coconut, is a monotypic genus in the palm family. The sole species, Lodoicea maldivica, is endemic to the islands of Praslin and Curieuse in the Seychelles. It formerly also was found on the small islets of St Pierre, Chauve-Souris and Ile Ronde (Round Island), all located near Praslin, but had become extinct there for a time until recently reintroduced. The name of the genus, Lodoicea, is derived from Lodoicus, the Latinised form of Louis, in honour of King Louis XV of France.
