A very nice and old IKAT from Sumba Island in Indonesia. It is a perfect example of early textile works made by local ethnic groups around 1930s. This piece of textile art was used as MONEY by the locals until late 1940s. They are simply fantastic pieces from an era and a world long time gone and erased by modern times. It is used as scarf, stole or just as a piece of home decor. The fabric is very old and have some dirty and stains that perhaps can be cleaned out by an expert in ancient textiles (not me). There is NO holes or damages to the fabric structure and even if colors are fading all over it, still some parts have an amazing pretty dark blue and brown colors. I guess, not sure, that a process of cleaning and stabilization by an expert will give back to this textile lot of previous splendor. Anyway, still this is a pretty piece for a collector or a museum.

Since textiles are the products of Sumba women, they are understood as the tangible representations of the female element of the bipartite universe. The Sumbanese believe a person is able to acquire the special powers and qualities of certain creatures when textiles displaying such motifs are worn. Although different cloths are appropriate apparel for men and women, textiles are seen collectively as a female component of their cosmos. Cloth is a symbol of the woman's family, the wife givers, who are ritually superior on ceremonial occasions. In ritual exchanges textiles are a prominent part of reciprocal gift for male objects such as metal, buffalo and ivory from the man's family, whose burden in gift giving is heavier because of the inferior status of the wife taker to that of the wife giver. Textiles on Sumba are both clothing and the currency of traditional ceremonial exchange.
