NOTE: this item is truly RARE find. Small and sculptural spoon made with 830 sterling silver (imported work, probably made by German silversmiths). The spoon has in the plate a representation of Monte Carlo Casino building from circa 1874 and the body or arm of the spoon has a detailed art nouveau floral work ending with a casino roulette disc that can spine 360 grades. The spon has some patina but in a general great antique condition.
Officially named "Casino de Monte-Carlo", the Monte Carlo Casino is a gambling and entertainment complex located in Monaco. It includes a casino, the Grand Théâtre de Monte Carlo, and the office of Les Ballets de Monte Carlo. The Casino de Monte-Carlo is owned and operated by the Société des bains de mer de Monaco, a public company in which the Monaco government and the ruling family have a majority interest. The company also owns the principal hotels, sports clubs, foods ervice establishments, and nightclubs throughout Monaco. The idea of opening a gambling casino in Monaco belongs to Princess Caroline, a shrewd, business-minded spouse of Prince Florestan I. Revenues from the proposed venture were supposed to save the House of Grimaldi from bankruptcy. Albert Aubert and businessman Napoleon Langlois opened the first casino at 14 December 1856 in Villa Bellevu. Intended to be only a temporary location, the building was a modest mansion in La Condamine. Later many movements, new constructions and polemics added fuel to the project until the glamorous institution we know today was well established.
